What to Do in the Garden in January

vegetable gardening for beginners uk

January plants can range from perennials and year-round annuals to herbs and veggies. This is the best time to plant roquettes, sweet peas, statice, and other cool-season vegetables. Vegetables such as spinach and collards can be planted a few weeks before the last frost. You can also plant edibles like globe artichokes and Swiss chard Bright Lights. Consider growing purple or green oak-leaf leaf lettuce to add colour to your summer flowering annuals.

Everyone wishes everyone a happy new Year as they enter the new year. It is important to remember that winter can cause serious damage to many garden structures. Wildlife also needs food. It is best to leave some areas of your garden uncut until spring, but you can trim rhododendron or wisteria bushes to the point where they are just above the bud. This will keep their foliage and flowers looking attractive for several months.

tips for vegetable garden

Now is a good time to plant seeds if your goal is to attract wildlife to the garden. Bird feeders are an easy way to start. However, you may also want to invest in a bug hotel. These are a great option to attract more wildlife and birds. This season is a great time to plant trees. Plan ahead for these projects. You can also plant trees and shrubs in January, if you have a wish list.

Even though the weather isn’t ideal for gardening you can still take advantage of the cooler, drier days and plan ahead. If you don't want to spend too much time in the garden, make sure to mulch and protect the soil around the base of your plants. Pruning deciduous trees is important before they begin to leaf out. Take out any dead or diseased branches, but don't remove too much fruiting tree. Dormant season oil or sprays can be applied to protect against leaf curl, overwintering pest eggs and other problems.

Planting in January is possible even in Zone 6 as the weather is not yet too cold to begin planting. However, if the weather warms up, you may be able to transplant your seedlings. If you plan to plant seeds outdoors, cover them with rowcovers. The seeds can be direct-sown with coleus and geranium, or you can plant early in the month.

Plants that are winter dormant are also available bare-root. Some of these include roses, deciduous trees, and wisteria. If you're unsure how to plant artichokes correctly, you can even plant them as bare-root. These won't survive if they're not well soaked. You can then plant them immediately.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
