How to Start Container Gardening

container planting

You will need to consider the space you have available. Big pots, on the other hand, are ideal for planting large plants and can save you from having to water multiple plants. A container garden with trailing Algerian ivy is a good choice. The Hardy Needle Palm is one the hardest trees on the planet. A beautiful container filled with colorful annuals is sure to add visual interest.

Make sure you remove the roots before planting your plants. This can be done with your hands or with a dull knife, pruning shears or a knife. Make sure that the crown is straight where it touches the soil. Next, you should tamper the soil around it and give it water. You may also want to add a layer of mulch around the base of the pot to help prevent it from drying out.

A container's design should compliment the style and personality of its surroundings. Choose a container that is strong enough to withstand the heat of the southern climates if you want it to stay outside all year. Southerly gardeners will need a pot that won’t crack. Consider your personal style, landscaping preferences, and pot size. Remember that drainage is the most essential feature of a container. Many pots come with holes in the bottom to allow drainage. You can still punch the hole yourself if it doesn't.

A container garden's design is an art in and of itself. Containers can be used to define spaces, enhance borders or add color to plants during off-season. Containers are either permanent elements of your garden or can be used to accent other areas when needed. They are easy to move and don't cost much. It's a great way of keeping your container collection fresh by rearranging them. Relocating them may be necessary to re-pot certain plants, depending on the season. You should keep in mind that plants might take some time to recover from a move.

When selecting plants for your container, make sure to consider the amount of space available. You can choose a smaller container if you have less space. However, smaller plants are still important. You should choose plants that are able to grow in small containers such as creeping strawberry begonias and geraniums. They are ideal for container gardening because of their compact growth pattern and peppery spice. You may find that a smaller container is more efficient, especially if you are working in confined spaces.

A container garden with contrasts between natural plants can add character to any space. A carefully chosen collection of modern containers showcases warm metal tones. On a mantel is a handsome planter that has a slate finish. It contains succulents mixed with 'Joey’s' ptilotus (a native Australian bottlebrush). The base is anchored by a dwarf gold arborvitae and large leafed kalancho.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
