Straw can quickly be composted in most gardens so that you can use it as a mulch in your vegetable garden. Be sure to soak the bales in warm water at least three days prior to planting. FAQ

What is the most important thing to do before you start a new garden?

When beginning a garden, the first thing to do is to prepare the soil. This involves adding organic matter, such as composted soil, grass clippings and leaves, straw or other material, to help provide nutrients for the plants. Next, plant seeds or seedlings into prepared holes. Then, water well.

What seeds should be started indoors?

Tomato seeds are the best choice for starting indoors. Tomatoes can be grown quickly and they bear fruit all year. It is important to be careful when planting tomatoes in containers. If you plant too early, the soil may dry out, which could cause the roots to rot. Be aware of diseases like bacterial wilt which can quickly kill plants.

How often should I water my indoor plant?

Watering indoor plants should be done every two days. Watering helps maintain humidity levels inside the house. For healthy plants, humidity is vital.

When should you plant flowers?

Planting flowers is best done during springtime when temperatures are milder and the soil is moist. If you live in a cold area, plant flowers only after the first frost. The ideal temperature indoors for plants is around 60°F.

How do I know what type of soil I have?

The dirt's color can tell you what it is. You will find more organic matter in darker soils that those of lighter colors. Soil testing is another option. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
