FAQ

What is the difference between hydroponic gardening and aquaponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening is a method that uses water to nourish plants instead of soil. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. It's like having your farm right in your home.

Which is the best layout for a vegetable garden?

Your location will determine the best layout for your vegetable garden. Plant vegetables together if your house is in a busy area. For maximum yield, however, it is best to space your plants if you are in a rural area.

What is a planting calendar?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal of the planting calendar is to increase plant growth while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas should be sown after the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and potatoes.

When should you plant flowers?

Planting flowers during springtime is best when temperatures are warm and the soil feels moist. If you live in a cold area, plant flowers only after the first frost. The ideal temperature for growing plants indoors is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! If space is limited, you can grow fruit trees in pots. Make sure your pot is drained to prevent the tree from getting rotted by excess moisture. The pot should be deep enough to hold the rootball. This will protect the tree from being stressed.

When to plant herbs?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. Basil indoors can be grown in pots with potting mixture. They should be kept out of direct sunlight until they grow leaves. When plants are growing, place them in bright indirect lighting. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
