How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
