home gardening ideas images

These tips can help you create successful straw bale gardens, regardless of whether you are a seasoned gardener or a beginner. The bales themselves need to be well-constructed to maximize the space available. They should not be watered too much as this can make them more porous and reduce their ability to absorb nutrients. You should treat the bales with dolomitic lime and a balanced fertilizer once a week.

You can fertilize your bales on days four to six after you have potted them. You can choose between half a cup of urea (46-0-0) or one cup of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0). The numbers following the fertilizer names indicate the amount of nitrogen and phosphorous in the product. A high level of nitrogen will speed up the decomposition process and condition. To keep the mixture moist, water them every day.

You should water the bales every day. You can add fertilizer to the soil every day. To keep the soil moist, you can add a bit of seaweed or compost tea to the mix before you plant. An old piece of cloth can also be added, which will allow the straw to decompose. When watering your bales, monitor them on a daily basis to make sure they have enough moisture. Drip irrigation can be used to keep the bales moist. Your bales can be fertilized with the same organic fertilizer as an in-ground vegetable garden.

Once your straw bale garden is established, you can plant your seeds. You can also plant transplants or seedlings. To prevent disease and overcrowding, make sure you have enough space between the plants. Watering your straw bale garden properly every two to 3 weeks is crucial. Over time, the soil can dry out and eventually break down. You can also reuse the soil by covering it with landscaping fabric.

Before you start planting, wait until straw bales are at 150 degrees. The temperature at which the plants can grow will reach 150 degrees by day 10. Allow the bales to soak in water for a few days until they reach the right pH level. Now it is time to plant them. Next, it's time to re-moisturize your bale.

FAQ

When is the best month to plant a vegetable garden in my area?

The best time to plant vegetables is from April through June. This is when the soil is warmest and plants grow fastest. If you live in colder climates, you might wait until July or Aug.

What is the difference between aquaponic gardening or hydroponic?

Hydroponic gardening uses nutrient-rich water instead of soil to feed plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. You can have your farm right at your house!

What's the best way to keep my indoor plant alive?

Indoor plants can survive for several years. It is vital to repot your plants every few months in order to encourage new growth. Repotting is simple. Remove the old soil and place fresh compost.

When to plant herbs

When the soil temperature is 55°F, herbs should be planted in spring. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. Once plants start growing, move them into bright indirect light. After three weeks, transplant the plants to individual containers. Water them frequently.

Is there enough space in my backyard to grow a vegetable garden.

You might be wondering if you have enough space to grow a vegetable garden if you don't have one. Yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For instance, raised beds could be constructed only 6 inches high. Containers can be used in place of raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

Growing tomatoes and peppers together is excellent because they both like similar temperatures and soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. Plant them together indoors at least six weeks before you plant them. Once the weather gets warmer, transplant your pepper and tomato plants outdoors.

What equipment do I need to grow vegetables?

No, not really. You only need a trowel, shovel, watering can, and a rake.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
