FAQ

What is your favorite vegetable garden layout?

It all depends on where you live. You should plant vegetables together if you live in a city. For maximum yield, however, it is best to space your plants if you are in a rural area.

Can I grow fruit trees inside pots?

Yes! Yes, pots are possible to grow fruit trees if space is tight. Make sure your pot is drained to prevent the tree from getting rotted by excess moisture. Also, ensure the pot is deep enough to hold the root ball. This will help prevent stress on the tree.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Spring crops later include squash, cucumbers, summer beans, and squash. The fall crops include potatoes and carrots.

What time should I plant herbs in my garden?

Herbs should be planted during springtime when soil temperatures reach 55degF. Plant them in full sun for best results. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. When plants are growing, place them in bright indirect lighting. After approximately three weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Continue to water them as needed.

Which seeds should start indoors?

A tomato seed makes the best seed for indoor planting. Tomatoes are very easy to grow and produce fruit year-round. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. Be aware of diseases like bacterial wilt which can quickly kill plants.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
