FAQ

When can you plant flowers in your garden?

Spring is the best season to plant flowers. It is when the temperatures are warmer and the soil is still moist. If you live somewhere cold, planting flowers should be done before the first frost. The ideal temperature for indoor gardening is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

What month is the best time to start a garden?

The best time to plant vegetables is from April through June. This is when the soil temperature is highest and plants grow most quickly. If you live in colder climates, you might wait until July or Aug.

When should you plant herbs?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. They should be in full sun to get the best results. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. After plants begin to grow, you can move them into indirect sunlight. After three to four weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Keep them hydrated.

What seeds should be started indoors?

A tomato seed is the best seed to start indoors. Tomatoes are very easy to grow and produce fruit year-round. If you are growing tomatoes in pots, take care when you transplant them to the ground. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. You should also be aware of diseases like bacterial Wilt that can quickly kill your plants.

What vegetables do you recommend growing together?

Because they are both fond of similar soil conditions and temperatures, it is easy to grow peppers and tomatoes together. Both are great companions as tomatoes require heat to ripen, while peppers need cooler temperatures to achieve their best flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. Once the weather cools down, transplant the pepper or tomato plants outdoors.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
