FAQ

How much space does a vegetable garden require?

It is best to remember that 1/2 pound of seed will be required for every square foot. For example, if you have a 10 foot by 10 foot area (3 meters by three meters), 100 pounds of seeds will be required.

What vegetables are good to grow together and what are the best?

Tomatoes and peppers can be grown together because they prefer similar soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. You can try planting them together by starting seeds indoors six weeks before transplanting them outdoors. Once the weather cools down, transplant the pepper or tomato plants outdoors.

How often do I need to water my indoor plants?

Indoor plants need watering once every two days. Watering helps maintain humidity levels inside the house. Healthy plants require humidity.

How long can I keep an indoor plant alive?

Indoor plants can last for many years. To ensure new growth, it's important that you repot indoor plants every few years. Repotting is easy; simply remove the old soil and add fresh compost.

How can I find out what type of soil my house has?

It is easy to tell the difference by the color of your dirt. Organic matter is more abundant in dark soils than those with lighter colors. Soil tests are another option. These tests measure the number of nutrients present in the soil.

How much light does a tree need?

It depends on the plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunlight per day. Some plants prefer 8 hours of direct sunlight. Most vegetables need 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

Which seeds should start indoors?

A tomato seed is the best for indoor gardening. Tomatoes grow quickly and bear good fruit all year. If you are growing tomatoes in pots, take care when you transplant them to the ground. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
