How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
